What is Duolingo English Test?

The Duolingo English Test is a large ­scale, computer ­adaptive, online test of English language proficiency that can be passed on anywhere and at any time. The Duolingo English Test is a modern English proficiency assessment for today’s international students and institutions .The test is used by over 2,000 institutions to make admissions decisions at the undergraduate or graduate level, placement decisions into university English language programs, or exit decisions from English language programs. The entire test experience takes just under an hour. Test results are certified within 48 hours, and they can be shared with an unlimited number of institutions.

 

Since its creation, a total score, representing English language ability, has been reported to test users. As adoption of the test for admissions purposes by English ­medium universities around the world has rapidly grown, The test is available online, on demand. so has interest from our stakeholders in additional information about language ability: subscores.

 

The purpose of subscores in a language test is to provide additional information about test taker abilities to use language at a finer grain size. For example, many large­ scale English language assessments report subscores as test­taker ability to speak, write, read, and listen, all of which are skills that are important in a number of situations, including university study.

The test is available online, on demand. You don’t have to make an appointment or travel to a test center—you can take the test from your home via a computer and webcam.

 

The test is administered using computer adaptive technology, meaning that the question difficulty adapts to each test taker. The test also integrates a video interview and writing sample, which are sent to an institution along with your proficiency score when you send your results.

What types of questions are on the Duolingo English Test?

 HOW THE TEST IS SET UP ( Measured out of 160 as Score)

Once you begin the test, you’ll be guided through three different sections.

1. Introduction and on boarding ~5 minutes ○ Ensure your computer’s camera, speakers, and microphone are functioning properly. ○ Submit your government-issued photo ID. ○ Review the test rules and requirements.

2. Graded computer adaptive test ~45 minutes ○ Measures your English skills through short question types. ○ Test questions are administered randomly. ○ Question difficulty changes based on your performance.

3. Ungraded video and writing sample ~10 minutes ○ You will be shown two questions, from a pool of hundreds, and given 30 seconds to choose which one to answer. ○ Video speaking sample allows for a 1–3 minute response, and the writing sample allows for a 3–5 minute response. ○ You can review your responses to the video interview and writing prompts before sharing with institutions.

Test Rules

  •  Must be alone in a quiet, well-lit room
  • Ears must be visible and uncovered
  • Face must be visible and unobscured
  • No headphones or earphones
  • No outside materials including mobile devices, notes, or textbooks
  • No communication with anyone else
  • No writing utensils or paper
  • Do not look away from the screen
  • Do not leave the test window for any reason
  • Do not use any predictive input method
  • Do not use any third party web camera software
  • Do not use a second monitor or any software that enables screen sharing or       remote access
  • Speak for at least 30 seconds on the topics presented during the graded speaking section
  • Do not use another person’s name or ID information to take the test
